Description of the Project

VINCI Environment UK was awarded the turnkey contract for the Energy from Waste facility Design and Build, which is part of the Allerton Waste Recovery Park, a multi-treatment site also composed of a mechanical treatment facility and an anaerobic digestion unit. The objective of this new facility is to significantly contribute to the reduction of waste to be landfilled in the territory of North Yorkshire.

Indeed, 55% of the 520 000 tonnes of waste from 760,000 inhabitants of North Yorkshire County and the city of York are buried and not valued. By choosing a multi-treatment, the Community commits to a 90% reduction of the landfilling and optimum recovery from waste. Eventually, the facility at Allerton Park will process each year about 320,000 tonnes of residual solid household waste through mechanical treatment. Once sorted 40,000 tonnes per annum will go through anaerobic digestion to recover energy in the form of biogas, and the remaining 300,000 tonnes will be thermally treated in 2 lines of 20 tonnes per hour to produce 24 MW of electricity. The plant will provide renewable electricity to more than 40,000 homes, equivalent to the needs of a city the size of Harrogate, close to the site.

Site Area : 5.1 hectares / Built Area (GFA) : 13,500 m²
Annual capacity : 320,000 tonnes / year of Municipal Solid Waste, Commercial & Industrial Waste and Refuse of Municipal Solid Waste after treatment or recycling
Energy Production : 220,000 MWh of electricity per year.

Work done and added value of our solution

  • Incinerated waste: Household Waste Recycling Centre residual (HWRC residual)
  • Two treatment lines, each processing 20t/h of waste with a Nominal Calorific Value (NCV) of 9 MJ/kg
  • Roller-grate furnaces, parallel flow low NOx combustion chambers
  • Steam production: pressure : 60 bar / temperature : 415 ° C / steam throughput: 60.5 t /h per line Condensing steam turbine generator. Nominal power : 28 MWe
  • Dry flue gas treatment process : non-catalytic NOx reduction (SNCR with ammonia water), lime and activated carbon injection to capture acid pollutants, dioxins and furans, bag filters filtration with recirculation and humidification of APC residues to capture dusts and residues
